CMS uses underwater acoustics in a variety of ways: active sonars are used for mapping the seafloor, and for sensing tidal current patterns and velocities (Tampa Bay P.O.R.T.S.); passive sonar is used to identify and track a variety of aquatic species (Marine Sensory Biology).

At COT, we have two ongoing projects in active acoustics:

• as part of a SOCOM DUSCE (view DUSCE info) initiative, we're working on improved underwater acoustic communications algorithms, software and devices
• as part of the ONR MATA (view MATA info) project, we're working on new acoustic transducer technologies
