Research Interests

I am interested in past climatic changes and its relationship with ocean and atmospheric circulation during the Cenozoic. My research is focused on the development of climate changes at different timescales, from centennial-millennial to orbital variability, and the correlation of the climate change events all over the world, with particular emphasis on Northern-Southern Hemispheres relationship.

I use several proxies such as benthic and planktic oxygen and carbon isotopes, trace element analysis on foraminifers (Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca), planktic foraminifer assemblages and transfer functions to calculate sea surface temperatures from assemblages and ice-rafted debris (IRD).

Currently I am involved in a project about climate variability during the Holocene and its relationship with solar irradiation, in which I am studying IRD deposits from different North Atlantic sites. To study IRD we are using Bond’s techniques (studying and classifying the IRD with a high magnification stereomicroscope) and we will compare these results with other IRD proxies as well as with other climate proxies to analyze the consistency of Holocene climate changes in the North Atlantic area. In this project Ph.D. student, Tasha Snow, is also involved (under Dr. Flower and my supervision) studying ice-rafting and changes in sea surface water masses off Svalbard.

Another of my research interests is how the Earth’s climate evolved to the ‘icehouse’ conditions of the late Pleistocene. I am especially interested in the Mid-Pleistocene transition (MPT) and the role of ocean circulation, orbital forcings and greenhouse gasses in all the events that took place during this interval. Also I found that comparisons between land and ocean evidences of climate changes during the MPT are essential to understand Earth’s climate evolution through the MPT and also the whole Cenozoic.
