Welcome to the University of South Florida's College of Marine Science (CMS). In the 50 years since its official beginning, CMS has expanded in size and capability to become an internationally recognized leader in ocean science and graduate education. We have 26 faculty, ~100 graduate students, and about 100 technical and administrative staff. CMS researchers secure ~$15M in annual research expenditures.
With the vision of a unified global, natural system in mind, the College seeks to build interdisciplinary research teams in collaboration with our local, national, and international partners. CMS scientists work in every ocean on issues of global and regional relevance, with research strengths, including sustainable fisheries, red tides, coral reef health, sea level rise, coastal flooding, ocean acidification, trace metals in seawater, paleoclimate, seafloor mapping, and sensor development.
The work we do at the College of Marine Science is more relevant than ever. Over the last year, the use of the word “Unprecedented” in the news is itself “Unprecedented”
- Unprecedented floods, hurricanes, and wildfires.
- Unprecedented atmospheric temperatures - 16 of the 17 warmest years in the instrumental record since the late 1800s have occurred in the period from 2001 to 2016.
- Unprecedented ocean temperatures - The ocean heat content has increased at all depths since the 1960s and surface waters have warmed by about 1.3° per century globally since 1900.
- Unprecedented atmospheric CO2 concentrations greater than 400 ppm, which has caused the ocean to become 30% more acidic.
To address the importance of the ocean as the major driver in the weather – climate system, CMS researchers use satellites, in situ measurements and models to study where heat is stored in the ocean, how it is transported from the surface ocean to deeper layers, the processes driving these changes, and the chemical and physical consequences.
In 2010, we witnessed an unprecedented environmental disaster - the Deepwater Horizon oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. The College of Marine Science at the University of South Florida continues to play a major role in understanding the dynamics of deep-sea petroleum blow-outs and the long-term ecosystem impacts of the 2010 disaster through our C-IMAGE international consortium funded by the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative.
Our graduate program emphasizes student success and career development. Our educational opportunities span the core disciplines of biology, chemical, geological, and physical oceanography, as well as marine resource assessment. Our endowment of $18 million funds 22 fellowships averaging from $9,000 to $22,000. We have been successful in recruiting and mentoring under-represented minority students, increasing the proportion of minority students from 14% to 19% over the last five years, significantly higher than the national range of 4% to 14%. Over the last year, our graduate students published 26 journal articles - 15 with graduate students as first author and 11 co-authored. Graduate student proposals resulted in over $230,000 in awarded external funding. Our students earned over 50 awards including prestigious fellowships and best presentations at professional meetings. Two students received Fulbright Fellowships in 2017 that contributed to USF being ranked #1 in the Country by the Chronicle of Higher Education and represented 33% of Fulbrights received by USF students.At the College of Marine Science, we are enthusiastic about research and education opportunities we offer our students and welcome you to become a part of the team.

Assuring Healthy Ocean, Human Interactions
We are a research intensive group. Our faculty is highly interdisciplinary and we address a wide variety of problems that are aimed at understanding the ocean's impact on humans, and vice versa, and at providing solutions to make these impacts as positive as possible. Our graduate students are intimately involved in this research and our faculty members provide unique enrichment opportunities in support of the university's undergraduate programs.
Local to Regional to Global
We are committed to research that is locally applied, regionally relevant and globally significant. We can inform local decision makers on a wide variety of important ocean-related issues, and we are also major players in research that spans the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean and the southeastern United States and extends to global problems. Some of our students come from the Tampa Bay area, but we recruit across the nation and across the world.
An Overview of Our Research Program
Our oceans are an important economic resource – consider fisheries and tourism, for example. Our oceans affect our weather, sometimes catastrophically in the case of storm surges. And our oceans exert a major control on the Earth's climate. Humans, on the other hand, also affect the ocean. This can happen by overfishing, by pollution, or by ocean acidification due to increased atmospheric carbon dioxide. We study all of these things and more.
A Few Examples of the Research We Do
At the local level we have ongoing studies in Tampa Bay and the West Florida Shelf that range from fisheries studies to investigations of the physical properties of our oceanic backyard. At the regional level we are proud of the observations and analyses done by our faculty and students in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon disaster. At the global scale we are involved in sea level rise research, climate modeling and ocean acidification studies.
Our Education Program - MS and PhD Degrees
We offer MS and PhD degrees and are committed to providing one of the highest quality graduate programs in the country. At the same time we are always looking for opportunities to enhance the undergraduate mission of the university. We have a strong Education and Outreach program that reaches many secondary school age children in our region. We are also looking to expand certificate opportunities for working professionals in our area and beyond.
We recruit graduate students from our region, across our nation and around the world. We are committed to maintaining a diverse and highly qualified graduate student population and enabling their success. Our program is a mentored one in which students work closely with their faculty advisors as apprentices. This is demanding of our faculty members' time, but upon graduation our students are fully prepared for a successful entry into our field.
Our research intensive program enables high quality, strategic enhancements to the university's undergraduate mission. We offer a variety of undergraduate courses and welcome upper level undergraduates to our college's core graduate courses. We are pursuing undergraduate minors in Marine Science and are discussing a Research Experience for Undergraduates program. We are excited that these contributions to undergraduate programs are expanding.
Faculty Engagement - Local to Global
Our faculty members are much more than researchers and teachers. We provide expert guidance at all levels, local to global, in our areas of expertise. We advise decision makers on ocean-related issues from fisheries management to sea level rise flooding risks to ocean acidification impacts on coral reefs. We are involved in setting the research agenda at every level. We are very proud of the good citizenship demonstrated by our faculty members.

Areas of Interests
Ecology and physiology of oceanic and estuarine fishes, age and growth, graduate and undergraduate teaching, teacher education, ocean literacy, and communicating science.
Dr. Greely provides expertise in the areas of biological oceanography, ecological physiology, marine fishes, and ocean science education. She has broad research interests which encompass teaching and training about the ocean sciences in three areas: graduate and undergraduate education, teacher education, and ocean literacy amongst youth. She currently coordinates four education programs: The Oceanography Camp for Girls (OCG), the In-service Teacher Oceanography Workshops (In-TOW), the National Ocean Science Bowl's regional Spoonbill Bowl competition, and the OCEANS Teaching Fellowships.
In addition to teaching natural sciences and science education courses, Dr. Greely, also developed a series of graduate courses focused on teaching and communicating ocean sciences. Programs and courses are designed to teach science parallel to the way science is practiced in a research setting: courses are inquiry based, experiential, and learner guided.
Dr. Greely's current research encompasses Ocean Literacy and reasoning about ocean issues by determining the influence of content, experience, and morality. The objective is to determine what youth around the world know about the ocean, what their attitudes are about ocean stewardship, and what they think about ocean issues.

As the Human Resources Administrator I am responsible for a wide range of responsibilities for leadership, direction, development, coordination, and the implementation of policies and procedures related to Human Resources and administrative services. I direct the HR functions of the College of Marine Science which include appointment processes, faculty and staff recruitments, payroll, workers compensation, pay distributions, and salary budget projection/forecasting.
I am responsible for interpreting University, Federal and State guidelines, rules and procedures, ensuring that human resources activities are in compliance.
