William W. Knight, a Toledo Ohio chemical magnate and his wife, Elsie Stranahan Knight, were great lovers of oceanography. In 1990, the Knight family endowed a total of six fellowships for USF's College of Marine Science. Knight fellowships are awarded annually and Knight fellows are supported for their entire graduate career. Knight fellows receive an annual stipend of $20,000 plus $2000 for research expenses, and a partial tuition waiver.

  2. ST. PETERSBURG PROGRESS ENDOWED FELLOWSHIP
The St. Petersburg Progress Fellowship in Coastal Science was established to support an outstanding marine science graduate student whose research focuses on coastal marine studies including any shallow estuarine, marine or continental shelf environment This fellowship can be awarded to a marine science student working in geological, chemical, physical, applied mathematical, biological or coastal engineering aspects of the coastal zone. Special consideration is given to those people whose research will strengthen the cooperative relationship between USF and the United States Geological Survey's Center for Coastal Geology and Regional Marine Studies. The fellowship recipient will receive $20,000 (Ph.D.) or $18,000 (M.S.) for one year, plus a partial tuition waiver.

  3. THE C.W. "BILL" YOUNG ENDOWED FELLOWSHIP
The C. W. "Bill" Young Endowed Fellowship was established by the St Petersburg business community to honor Congressman Bill Young, who has been essential to the emergence of a major oceanographic research complex at the University of South Florida's College of Marine Science. The Young Fellowship was designed to support graduate students whose research delves into biological, chemical, geological or physical processes operating in the oceans, estuaries, fresh water environments, or at the air-sea interface. Special consideration will be given to research projects that involve development and/or research application of new/improved chemical, biological or physical sensing systems, especially including microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). The Young fellowship recipient will receive $12,000 for one year, plus a partial tuition waiver.

  4. ROBERT M. GARRELS ENDOWED FELLOWSHIP
The Robert M. Garrels Endowed Fellowship was established to honor the memory of Robert M. Garrels, an eminent geochemist in USF' s College of Marine Science from 1980 to 1988. Since its establishment in 1988, the Garrels Fellowship is awarded annually to an especially accomplished Marine Science graduate student. The recipient of the Garrels Fellowship will receive $10,000 for one year, plus a partial tuition waiver.

  5. PAUL L. GETTING ENDOWED MEMORIAL FELLOWSHIP

Paul's vision for St. Petersburg's beautiful downtown included a vibrant, interactive and successful university, marine science, medical and technological complex. The Knight Oceanographic Research Center on USF's St. Petersburg Campus is one manifestation of Mr. Getting's effective involvement in transforming his vision to reality. Since its establishment in 1994, the Getting Fellowship is awarded to one student each year who has completed their first year of study and exemplifies some of Mr. Getting's traits of intelligence, effectiveness, and dedication. The Getting Fellowship awards the recipient $11,000 for one year, plus a partial tuition waiver.

  6. GULF OCEANOGRAPHIC CHARITABLE TRUST FELLOWSHIP
The Gulf Oceanographic Charitable Trust was founded by the City of St. Petersburg to promote local marine science research. The Gulf Oceanographic Trust established two endowed fellowships to enable two graduate students to continue their research studies. Each award is for $12,000 for one year, plus a partial tuition waiver.

  7. JOHN B. LAKE FELLOWSHIP IN MARINE SCIENCE
The John B. Lake Fellowship was established as part of the Poynter Fund to Honor John B. Lake who retired in 1983 as publisher of the St Petersburg Times and Evening Independent. Mr. Lake was an influential lobbyist on behalf of the marine science program. Among the results of Mr. Lake's efforts was the creation of an endowed chair in Marine Science through donations from the St. Petersburg Downtown Partnership, Inc. The recipient of the Lake Fellowship will receive $12,000 for one year, plus a partial tuition waiver.

  8. SANIBEL - CAPTIVA SHELL CLUB FELLOWSHIP IN MARINE SCIENCE
For many years the Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club has supported graduate students in USF's College of Marine Science. In 1985 the club voted to establish an endowed fellowship that would support cutting-edge research by USF Marine Science graduate students. The award will be for $10,000 for one year.

Most importantly is their love and concern for the environment in which they live, work, and play. This non-profit club is devoted to the environmental restoration and preservation of the marine animals, waters, and shorelines of Tampa Bay. The Tampa Bay Parrot Head Scholarship in Marine Science pays tribute to a USF Marine Science graduate student who is conducting marine research in and around the waters of Tampa Bay. The award is for $2,500.

  12. BRIDGE TO THE DOCTORATE ENDOWED FELLOWSHIP

The program will help provide research and professional development experiences for underrepresented U.S. minority students. The fellowship will be awarded annually to the most meritorious minority graduate student. The term "minority" as used by NSF refers to those ethnic groups that are significantly underrepresented at advanced levels of science and engineering in the U.S., i.e., Native Americans (including American Indians and Alaskan Natives), African-Americans, Hispanics, and Native Pacific Islanders. This fellowship follows the same definition. In addition to academic and professional excellence, the "spirit" of this fellowship is too encourage excellence in service, community outreach, community building, professional development, and leadership. The Joint Oceanographic Institutions has contributed money for the first five years of this endowment in a joint effort with the Bridge to the Doctorate Program to reach the level necessary to insure that State Match Program will provide a match in funding. Past winners may reapply. The award is for $20,000.
