Research Interests
Studying both the geologic record and modern coral reefs, my students and I gain insight not only into environments of the past and present, but also the effects of human activities on future tropical benthic ecosystems. Our work has implications for cell biology, coral-reef ecology, environmental management, global environmental change, evolution, paleoceanography, sedimentology, and hydrocarbon exploration.
Ongoing or recently completed projects include:
- decadal-scale changes in reef communities of the Florida Keys
- development of bioindicators applicable to reef environments worldwide
- effects of potentially toxic elements (e.g., arsenic, heavy metals) on foraminiferal assemblages in tropical environments
- larger benthic foraminifers in Miocene reef communities
- effects of ocean acidification on calcification in benthic organisms
