My research has been devoted to assessing the impact of various observational data from radar and satellite on the predictions of mesoscale weather systems. Before joining the University of South Florida (USF) College of Marine Sciences, I was extensively involved in the development of the variational data assimilation system for the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). During the past five years, I led the development of 1) a Doppler radar data assimilation algorithm in WRF 3-dimensional variational (WRF 3D-Var) data assimilation system, 2) a hurricane initialization scheme based on variational assimilation of remote sensing and synthetic observations for WRF hurricane forecast, and 3) the tangent linear and adjoint models of the advanced research WRF (ARW). As a new faculty in USF College of Marine Sciences, I have focused on ocean-atmosphere interaction emphasizing on hurricane research with coupled ocean-atmospheric modeling and data assimilation in the mesoscale. Our group has already established a coupled ocean-atmosphere modeling system using WRF and HYCOM. Constructing a coupled ocean-atmosphere data assimilation system is the next step. With coupled ocean-atmosphere modeling and data assimilation systems, we are investigating various scientific problems related to hurricane intensity and intensity change issues. It is anticipated that the fundamentals of hurricane intensity and intensity change will be better revealed through research on ocean-atmosphere interaction and data assimilation of remote sensing data from satellites and radars.
