Marine Microbes (viruses, Archaea, Bacteria, Eucarya) comprise the most abundant and diverse group of organisms on the planet. Microorganisms in the oceans affect the production and consumption of "greenhouse" gases, the biogeochemical cycling of many elements, form the basis of marine food webs, and can cause deleterious effects to humans and entire ecosystems.

The Marine Microbiology Group under the direction of Dr. John H. Paul is located in the Knight Ocean Research Center of the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg. The Marine Microbiology Group has been interested in the role of viruses in the marine environment, the regulation of carbon fixation in the oceans, and the development of sensors to monitor marine microbes and their activity.
