During Fall 2008, Benjamin P. Flower, CMS Associate Professor, served as invited speaker for multiple presentations on past climate change
Dr. Flower's recent research focuses on the role of glacial meltwater and ocean circulation in abrupt climate change.
He presented "Abrupt Climate Change: The Southern Meltwater Route" at the Gary Comer Science and Education Foundation meeting on Sept. 15-16, at Leeward Farm in western Wisconsin. He was invited by Wally Broecker, George Denton and Richard Alley. Co-authors are Carlie Williams and David Hastings (Eckerd College).
He traveled to Potsdam, Germany to present "Climate Variability in the Gulf of Mexico on 10^2 to 10^5 Year Timescales" on Sept 29th through Oct 1st at the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Workshop on Ultra-high Resolution Geologic Records of Climate Change. He was invited by Larry Peterson, David Hodell, and Juergen Thurow. Co-authors are Jessica Whitaker, Julie Richey, and Terry Quinn (U. of Texas).
He will be presenting "Meltwater routing and the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation: A Gulf of Mexico perspective" at the
American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting (invited presentation to Session PP14: North Atlantic Freshwater Forcing: History, Consequences, and Implications for Future Climate Change). Co-authors are Carlie Williams, Noura Randle, and David Hastings (Eckerd College).
Dr. Flower is also author or co-author on seven Fall AGU abstracts.

Formation of Marine Science Alumni Society
At the beginning of this Fall, the Marine Science Alumni Society has been formed under the auspices of the USF Alumni Association with the goal of providing a forum for the over 400 graduates of the USF Marine Science program to reconnect and network both socially and professionally. In addition, the Marine Science Alumni Society will serve as a bridge between the alumni and CMS faculty, students, and staff as both organizations continue to grow. USF Marine Science alumni do not have to be a member of the USF Alumni Association in order to be a member of the Marine Science Alumni Society. The Marine Science Alumni Society is currently made up of a core Contact Group of eleven alumni (listed below). Visit the Marine Science Alumni Society web page to learn more about the upcoming news and events for CMS Alumni.

Girls Empowered at the Marine Science and Technology Workshop
Thirty Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts from the West Central Florida Council participated in a full day of marine science discovery at the Girl Scout Marine Science and Technology Workshop held on Saturday, October 25, 2008.

The workshop was organized by Mya Breitbart, Ali Hudon, and Kim Pause from the USF College of Marine Science. During the event, Girl Scouts cleaned up a local beach, used a seine net to collect fish and invertebrates from Tampa Bay, toured the Pier Aquarium, learned about meterology, toured an oceanographic research vessel, performed a plankton tow, examined samples under the microscope, built remotely operated vehicles, and explored the fields of marine geology, acoustics, ecology, and microbiology. Throughout the day the girls had the opportunity to interact with female scientists (including researchers, graduate students, and aquarium staff) and interview them about their careers. These interactions are critical for developing girls’ interest in science and technology, and encouraging the girls to pursue these interests. Each Girl Scout earned the “From Shore to Sea” Interest Project by participating in the event, but more importantly, had the opportunity to develop a lasting interest in marine science and technology.

Dr. Boris Galperin, CMS Associate Professor, and colleagues have discovered and named a new class of waves

The waves, which they have called “zonons,” were discovered through computer simulations carried out after satellite observations, terrestrial oceans and space craft surveillance of the atmospheres of some giant planets revealed the presence of eddy-like structures moving with the same speed as planetary waves called “Rossby waves.” Galperin and colleagues describe the physics of zonons in Physical Review Letters (Vol. 101:16), a journal of the American Physical Society.
With the discovery of zonons, Galperin and his colleagues, Semion Sukoriansky and Nadejda Dikovskaya, both of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Pearlstone Center for Aeronautical Engineering Studies, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beer-Sheva, Israel, offer a new way to understand circulation in the oceans and in the weather layers of giant planets.

CMS is proud to announce that two of our Marine Geologists have received major awards from the Society for Sedimentary Geology (SEPM)
Dr. Al C. Hine, CMS Associate Dean of Research, received the 2009 Francis P. Shepard Medal for "Excellence in Marine Geology" from SEPM
Hine has been at USF since 1979, won the award named after Shepard who, recognized as the father of marine geology, is best known for his work studying submarine canyons and seafloor currents. Hine’s research includes studying the geologic origins and evolution of submerged ancient shorelines, ancient and current reefs and barrier islands. His recent work includes scientific ocean drilling and work surveying the sea floor using high-resolution seismic reflection, side-scan sonar profiling and remotely-operated vehicles. For more information please visit Al Hines faculty webpage
Gene Shinn, CMS Courtesy Professor, recieved the 2009 William H. Twenhofel Medal for "Excellence in Overall Sedimentary Geology" from SEPM
The Twenhofel medal is the highest award given by SEPM. It is awarded annually for "Outstanding Contributions to Sedimentary Geology." Gene started his profession in geology with Shell Oil co. and in 1974 began his 31 year career with the USGS, where he has conducted pioneering scientific research on carbonate sediments and coral-reef ecosystems.
They will receive the awards at the Society’s annual meeting in Denver, June, 2009. Congratulations Al Hine and Gene Shinn!
