Julia Galkiewicz

Degree Sought: Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography

Dissertation Topic:

Cataloging Diversity of Microbial Communities Associated with Deep-Sea Corals

Educational Background:

  • Bachelor of Science in Biology; The College of William and Mary, 2002

Research Interests:

I'm interested in discovering and cataloging roles of microbes associated with corals, in both deep and shallow reefs. The function of bacteria in coral health and disease is not well understood.

Research Experience:

  • Marine Microbiology Research, Dr. Christina Kellogg
    • USGS, St. Petersburg, Fall 2006-Present
    • Cataloguing and comparing temporal shifts in coral-associated microbial communities of Pocillopora damicornis, collected from Ofu, American Samoa.
  • Biological Oceanography Research, Research Aide, Dr. Kam Tang
    • Virginia Institute of Marine Science, Summer 2006
    • Filtered and stained preserved Antarctic seawater, using epifluorescent microscopy to catalogue diversity and quantity of phytoplankton. Prepared and photographed phytoplankton samples using SEM to aid in identification.
  • Oceanography Research, Summer Internship, Dr. Mark Patterson, Biological Sciences
    • Virginia Institute of Marine Science, Summer 2005
    • Wrote Excel spreadsheets to quantify data from AUV. Translated data into graphs to study the change in dissolved oxygen concentrations along the sea floor as it relates to substrate type.

Work Experience:

  • Galkiewicz, J., C. A. Kellogg. (In prep). Cross-Kingdom Amplification Using Bacterial-Specific Primers: Complications for Coral Microbial Ecology.
  • Galkiewicz, J. P., C. A. Kellogg. Temporal Shifts in Bacterial Communities Associated with the Pacific Stony Coral Pocillopora damicornis. Florida Branch, American Society of Microbiology, Oct. 5, 2007.

Work Experience:

  • Research Aide, VIMS, May-August 2006

Honors and Awards:

  • University of South Florida Presidential Fellowship
  • Monroe Scholar Program, College of William and Mary

Skills and Certifications:

  • AAUS Science Diver
  • NASUI Advanced Open Water Diver
  • DAN Oxygen Provider
  • CPR-First Aid Certified
  • Nitrox Diver
