BIOLOGICAL OCEANOGRAPHY
COURSES OFFERED
Biological Oceanography Biological Oceanography is a required core course. The course is structured around a series of lectures, laboratories, and field work. The goal is to provide a solid foundation in Biological Oceanography with a hands-on approach to modern methods.
Marine Sensory Ecology Marine sensory ecology covers sensory adaptations of all marine animals. Topics include hearing, sound production, vision, light production, lateral lines and hydrodynamic stimuli, electrosensory systems, and chemosensation. The course also serves as an introduction to signal processing using MATLAB.
Ichthyology Ichthyology is co-taught by Dr. Torres and Dr. Mann and covers all aspects of fish biology. The highlight is a 6-day cruise aboard the R/V Bellows to the Dry Tortugas where students carry out mini-research projects on coral reef fishes.
Statistics This course covers basic statistics and experimental design. It assumes you know nothing about statistics, and will cover all math involved (a solid knowledge of algebra is assumed). The goal is for you to develop a solid base in statistics and to learn how to use available resources for designing experiments and choosing and implementing appropriate statistical tests.
Coursework will involve a combination of lectures, problem sets, and reviews of scientific papers and their use of statistics. Most of the examples will be for the analysis of biological data, but should be applicable to other fields.
