MARINE RESOURCE ASSESSMENT (MRA)
Admissions Guidelines
Undergraduate Preparation / Admission Requirements
- Have a a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a regionally accredited university (preferable
majors include biology, chemistry, geology, physics or math). Master’s degree in one of the
above sciences highly preferable for Ph.D. applicants.
- Earned a “B” (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) average or better in all work attempted while registered as an upper division student working for a baccalaureate degree.
(Having these scores does not guarantee admission to our program.)
- Have completed the coursework listed on the Undergraduate Preparation page. Preference will be given to students who also have 2 semesters of Statistics at undergraduate level.
- Have taken the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) within 5 years preceding application. Preference will be given to students with minimum scores of: Verbal=550 and Quantitative=700.

- Have the commitment of a Marine Science faculty member to serve as advisor during the student’s graduate studies.

All CMS Faculty listed (under Biological, Chemical, Geological, and Physical Oceanography) may serve as major professors for the concentration in Marine Resource Assessment. Please visit the Faculty web pages to identify the faculty member/s whose research matches your interests.
Thesis/dissertation topic selection:
1) must be science-based
2) should have an application to marine resource management or policy development
3) should not directly make management or policy recommendations
4) should be identified near the onset of graduate work
5) should address priorities identified by marine resource management agencies (Florida Fish & Wildlife Research Institute, National Marine Fisheries Service, US Geological Survey)
