Katie received her B.S. in Biology with a minor in Technical Writing from the University of South Florida. After graduating she began working at NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service in St. Petersburg, FL where she is a part of the Atlantic Highly Migratory Species Division. Her focus there has been on improving the communication of science and regulations to the stakeholders, including the public.
While continuing her work at NMFS, Katie has been pursuing a Master's at USF's College of Marine Science. Her research deals with classifying the living habitat in marine protected areas along the West Florida shelf, specifically the Florida Middle Grounds. She is examining this area using C-BASS imagery to further exemplify the utility of this system in assessing the establishment of new, and monitoring the health of existing, marine protected areas. Katie is also using historical data which characterized the benthos in the Florida Middle Grounds in order to identify any potential changes.
