| The coastal ocean provides valuable resources; more than 90% of the worlds fish catch and 25% of our oil. More than 50% of the world’s population lives with 50 miles of the coast, causing stress on our coastal environment. Population explosion and coastal development have led to a proliferation of harmful algal blooms, damage to watersheds and urban water supplies, and compromised public health and food safety. The Systems Development Group seeks to improve ecosystem protection and management through development and implementation of micro-integrated systems technology. Currently, the group is developing a suite of instruments to address biological, chemical, and physical aquatic and terrestrial processes. |
