Marine Organic Geochemistry Laboratory

Use of Organic Biomarkers to Trace Inputs, Dispersal and Accumulation of Marine, Terrestrial and Urban Organic Matter.

Analysis of naturally occurring organic compounds allows the investigation of many different types biological and environmental processes that occur in the ocean. These molecular biomarkers can be used to determine such things as the origin and fate of organic matter, diagenetic pathways, as chronological dating tools, and for the reconstruction of paleoconditions such as temperature, salinity, oxygen, water circulation, sea level stands and climate. We can also use these organic compounds to look into metabolic and physiological processes of marine organisms including such things as buoyancy considerations, insulation, response to toxic chemicals, and sound transduction. All of these processes allow marine organic chemists to interface with investigators of other disciplines to help resolve many of the mysteries of the sea.
