{"id":2578,"date":"2014-09-03T00:01:01","date_gmt":"2014-09-03T00:01:01","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2019-09-24T18:15:58","modified_gmt":"2019-09-24T18:15:58","slug":"habitat-and-diet-of-lionfish-in-the-northern-gulf-d57","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marine.usf.edu\/c-image\/habitat-and-diet-of-lionfish-in-the-northern-gulf-d57\/","title":{"rendered":"Habitat and diet of lionfish in the northern Gulf"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Habitat-specific density and diet of rapidly expanding invasive red lionfish, <em>Pterois volitans<\/em>, populations in the Northern Gulf of Mexico<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Invasive lionfish were first reported in the Gulf of Mexico in the summer of 2010. \u00a0Their density and size distributions were examined from the fall of 2010 to 2013 to examine their potential impacts on native fish communities. \u00a0During the sampling period, lionfish populations increased exponentially. \u00a0Lionfish density at artificial reef locations was two orders of magnitude higher than at natural reef sites. \u00a0Their diet varied among habitats, seasons, and size classes. Results indicate that lionfish are mesopredators in the northern Gulf becoming more piscivorous at larger sizes.
