\u00bfPorque decidi\u00f3 estudiar en la UNAM \u2013 ICMyL?\/<\/strong>Why did you decide to study at UNAM-ICML?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Porque en el ICMyL se desarrollan los temas de investigaci\u00f3n que son de mi inter\u00e9s, los cuales est\u00e1n relacionados con estudios micropaleontol\u00f3gicos, especialmente aquellos realizados con foramin\u00edferos en un  contexto paleoceanogr\u00e1fico.<\/p>\n

Because the UNAM- ICMyL develops the research topics that are of my interest, which are related to micropaleontological studies, especially those made with foraminifera in a paleoceanographic context.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00bfC\u00f3mo sus resultados ayudan a comprender los derrames de petr\u00f3leo?\/How do your results help understand oil spills?<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Al comparar la abundancia, diversidad y riqueza de poblaciones de foramin\u00edferos bent\u00f3nicos en secuencias de sedimento superficial submuestreadas a una resoluci\u00f3n de 0.2 mm y colectadas alrededor de la zona de derrame de petr\u00f3leo (Ixtoc) se puede comparar como se comportaban estas poblaciones antes, durante y despu\u00e9s del evento, tratar de comprender como este agente externo \u201cnocivo\u201d repercuti\u00f3 en la ecolog\u00eda de organismos bent\u00f3nicos, cuanto tiempo paso antes de que afectara a la poblaci\u00f3n y  como ha sido la recuperaci\u00f3n de los mismos.<\/p>\n

By comparing the abundance, diversity and richness of the populations of benthic foraminifera in a sequence of surface sediment subsampled at a resolution of 0.2 mm and collected around the area of oil spill (Ixtoc) we can compare how the population behave before, during and after the event. With this study we try to understand how this “harmful” foreign agent affected the ecology of benthic organisms, how much time before it affected the populations and how long is takes to be recovered.<\/em><\/p>\n

Temas de investigaci\u00f3n son paleoceanograf\u00eda y paleoclimatolog\u00eda utilizando principalmente proxies biol\u00f3gicos (foramin\u00edferos bent\u00f3nicos y radiolarios polycystinos). Estudios poblacionales y ecol\u00f3gicos con foram\u00edniferos bent\u00f3nicos del Holoceno del Golfo de M\u00e9xico y  estudios poblacionales y ecol\u00f3gicos con  radiolarios en el Golfo de California.<\/p>\n

Paleoceanography and paleoclimatology mainly using biological proxies (benthic foraminifera and radiolarians – Polycystins). Population and ecological studies with benthic foraminifera during the Holocene in the Gulf of Mexico and population and ecological studies with radiolarians in the Gulf of California, Mexico.<\/em><\/p>\n

Licenciatura y Maestr\u00eda realice un proyecto sobre las condiciones paleoceanogr\u00e1ficas y paleoclimaticas con un alcance temporal del Holoceno medio utilizando como proxies radiolarios polycystinos, geoqu\u00edma y par\u00e1metros magn\u00e9ticos en la regi\u00f3n sur del Golfo de California, M\u00e9xico.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the Bachelor\u2019s and Master\u2019s degrees I did  research on paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic conditions with during the middle Holocene using radiolarians, geochemistry and magnetic parameters as proxies in the southern Gulf of California, Mexico.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Terminando una especialidad en microscop\u00eda electr\u00f3nica en ciencias biol\u00f3gicas, UNAM realizando una descripci\u00f3n morfol\u00f3gica de polen de cact\u00e1ceas columnares de la regi\u00f3n de Puebla y Oaxaca-Mexico.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have studies in electron microscopy in biological sciences at UNAM, performing a morphological description of columnar cacti pollen in the region of Puebla and Oaxaca-Mexico.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Participe en un proyecto llamado FACIES sedimentarias del Golfo de M\u00e9xico, analizando poblaciones foramin\u00edferos bent\u00f3nicos.<\/span><\/p>\n

I worked in a project  analyzing benthic foraminifera populations in the Gulf of Mexico.<\/em><\/p>\n

Durante tus investigaciones \u00bfque ha sido lo que m\u00e1s te ha sorprendido?\/<\/span>Which of your findings or research has been the most eye-opening?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

A partir de conocer la ecolog\u00eda de los foramin\u00edferos bent\u00f3nicos se puede determinar<\/span>  <\/span>los l\u00edmites o rangos ambientales en los cuales se desarrollan conociendo cuales son los par\u00e1metros o variables oceanogr\u00e1ficas a los cuales son susceptibles. Me sorprende el hecho de que solo conociendo la estructura poblacional de estos organismos se pueda asociar a un ambiente costero o ner\u00edtico y el estudiar como son afectadas las poblaciones por el derrame de petr\u00f3leo estos diferentes ambientes marinos. Es interesante como estos estudios de asociaciones ecol\u00f3gicas actuales pueden utilizarse para realizar interpretaciones de condiciones oceanogr\u00e1ficas en el pasado.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

By knowing the ecology of benthic foraminifera and the oceanographic variables to which they are susceptible can be determined environmental limits or ranges in which they develop. I’m surprised that only by knowing the population structure of these organisms can be associated with a coastal or pelagic distribution and how populations are affected by the oil spill in these different marine environments. It is interesting how the actual ecological associations can be used to make interpretations of oceanographic conditions in the past.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00bfEn qu\u00e9 momentos de la investigaci\u00f3n te has sorprendido?\/<\/span>Were the moments or results just made you say “I did not expect that”?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Al momento de ver el material y reconocer la estructura l\u00edtica y biol\u00f3gica y el observar el cambio en la proporci\u00f3n de estos componentes en las diferentes muestras de una misma secuencia sedimentaria, te da una primera referencia de que es lo que vas encontrar a lo largo del an\u00e1lisis micropaleontol\u00f3gico. Al realizar la interpretaci\u00f3n del an\u00e1lisis poblacional de foramin\u00edferos bent\u00f3nicos y tratar de explicar el porqu\u00e9 de los resultados obtenidos es la parte que m\u00e1s me sorprende.<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking at the material in stereoscopic microscope, to recognize the lythic and biological structure and observe the change in the proportion of these components in different samples of the same sedimentary sequence gives you a first reference that is what you will find along the micropalaeontological analysis.
