This COMIT program focus area also encompasses the development of <strong>outreach<\/strong>, <strong>media<\/strong> and <strong>data products<\/strong> utilized by a wide range of stakeholders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">COMIT works to operationalize cutting-edge approaches to seafloor mapping and improve response capacity to coastal hazards, however <strong>much of the work that we do would not be possible without the consistent support from and collaboration with federal, state, and local organizations, private individuals, and local businesses<\/strong>. Through collaboration with NOAA Coast Survey (OCS), NOAA\u2019s Center of Excellence for Ocean and Great Lake Mapping, and academic partners, undergraduate and graduate students on the Nancy Foster have the opportunity to <strong>gain operational skills and proficiency<\/strong> to support the development and long-range mission of <strong>hydrography<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Students spend a week aboard the ship, assisting with the collection of <strong>water column data<\/strong>, <strong>multibeam bathymetry<\/strong>, and <strong>acoustic backscatter<\/strong> used to <strong>update NOAA\u2019s nautical charting products<\/strong> from priority areas offshore of South Carolina on the <strong>Blake Plateau<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Check out<\/strong> our latest video project from <strong>July 15-21, 2024 Nancy Foster<\/strong> participants:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A Week Aboard the NOAA Ship Nancy Foster: A Student&#039;s Journey\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ua2gm9DH8A4?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Undergraduate Intern Opportunities<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>COMIT has <strong>prioritized recruiting interns at the undergraduate level<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usf.edu\/marine-science\/\">USF\u2019s College of Marine Science<\/a> is solely a graduate program and access to undergraduate talent is largely through COMIT\u2019s relationship with USF\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usf.edu\/arts-sciences\/\">College of Arts and Sciences<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usf.edu\/engineering\/\">College of Engineering<\/a>, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spcollege.edu\/\">St. Pete College<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/\">Eckerd College<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>COMIT undergraduate interns have <strong>assisted in the prep, planning and execution of field deployments<\/strong> with the Ocean Circulation Lab, have been <strong>instrumental in shore testing the various components of the spar buoy<\/strong> (See: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marine.usf.edu\/comit\/geodetics\/\">Enhancing Geodetic Observations<\/a>) and have played a <strong>vital role in developing components for our uncrewed surface vessel (USV) TREVOR<\/strong> \u2013 Test Robotics Environment Vehicle for Ocean Research. We received additional funding from the <a href=\"https:\/\/floridahightech.com\/\">Florida High Tech Corridor<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thsoa.org\/\">Hydrographic Society of America<\/a> and have employed more interns to lend their talents to a variety of projects including: <strong>developing ArcGIS StoryMaps<\/strong>, <strong>processing bathymetry data<\/strong>, engineering further USV parts for TREVOR, <strong>creating visual SOPs for marine research<\/strong> cruises and more.<\/p>\n<p>Our <strong>undergraduate interns have participated in various conferences and meetings<\/strong> such as the Gulf of Mexico Conference (GOMCON), College of Charleston\u2019s BEAMS Symposium, and COMIT\u2019s own Annual Review with NOAA. With <strong>three new master\u2019s students enrolled in the 2024-25 academic year<\/strong>. COMIT currently advises, mentors, funds, and invites research opportunities to seven master\u2019s students and four PhD students.<\/p>\n<p>Started in October 2022, <strong>COMIT implements a Marine Geophysical Tools course<\/strong> for the Hydrography concentration requirement at USF CMS. This course instructs students on the application of various sounding tools to gain information on how different tools are used for different applications and includes a 4-day research cruise off the West Florida Shelf. Students gain skill development as the next generation of marine scientists and hydrographers and makes them more employable in the emerging Blue Economy sector.<\/p>\n<p>Delivered by <strong>USF\u2019s Muma College of Business<\/strong> with additional course requirements through USF\u2019s College of Marine Science, COMIT took part in establishing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usf.edu\/business\/graduate\/mba-online\/coursework.aspx\"><strong>Blue MBA concentration<\/strong><\/a>.
