Many beautiful stories were created together with <a title=\"Sparks Creative Stories\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sparkscreativestories.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sparks Creative Stories <\/a>and artists from <a title=\"Creative Clay\" href=\"https:\/\/www.creativeclay.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Creative Clay<\/a>, a local organization that works with individuals with physical and developmental disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Find them here:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sparkscreativestories.substack.com\/p\/marine-science-art-dance-and-stories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/sparkscreativestories.substack.com\/p\/marine-science-art-dance-and-stories<\/a><\/p>\n[vc_media_grid element_width=&#8221;3&#8243; css=&#8221;&#8221; grid_id=&#8221;vc_gid:1773759053646-345c2f7d-cf14-7&#8243; include=&#8221;1766,1767,1769,1768&#8243;]<hr><h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">Art &amp; Science Night<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"il\">Art<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<span class=\"il\">science<\/span>\u00a0seem to be at opposite ends of the spectrum, but\u00a0<span class=\"il\">art<\/span>\u00a0is a\u00a0<span class=\"il\">science<\/span>\u00a0of its own and\u00a0<span class=\"il\">artists<\/span>\u00a0can be inspired by all things nature. USF College of Marine\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Science<\/span> invited <span class=\"il\">artists<\/span>\u00a0to experience how\u00a0<span class=\"il\">scientists<\/span>\u00a0view the world with the hopes of inspiring a new piece of work.\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Artists<\/span> had the chance to look under microscopes at living plankton, see the deadly beauty of a virus infecting a cell, paint with live bacteria, and talk to marine chemists.<\/p>\n[vc_media_grid element_width=&#8221;3&#8243; grid_id=&#8221;vc_gid:1773759053653-177c8d3c-4c02-4&#8243; include=&#8221;1165,1166,1038,1164&#8243;]<hr><h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">Oceanography Camp especially for Girls Lab<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">From 2022-2025, we have been hosting a lab for the Oceanography Camp especially for Girls. Campers become detectives for a day as they collected the DNA left behind by organisms in the water, known as environmental DNA (eDNA), do a DNA extraction on stawberries, grow bacteria on plates, and learn how to identify fish eggs using DNA. All of this information is presented at a small symposium at the end of camp.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usf.edu\/marine-science\/news\/2022\/dna-detectives.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.usf.edu\/marine-science\/news\/2022\/dna-detectives.aspx<\/a><\/p>\n[vc_media_grid element_width=&#8221;3&#8243; css=&#8221;&#8221; grid_id=&#8221;vc_gid:1773759053659-226f2f65-466e-0&#8243; include=&#8221;1776,1781,1779,1895&#8243;]<hr><h2><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">St. Petersburg Science Festival<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Each year our lab participates in the St. Petersburg Science Festival. In 2017 and 2018 we had a booth called Phage Heroes, teaching kids about good viruses that destroy bad bacteria. To learn more about this activity, click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5969416\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> for the publication. In 2019 we had a booth called DNA Detectives, teaching kids about how to identify fish eggs using their DNA or genetic code.<\/p>\n[vc_media_grid element_width=&#8221;3&#8243; grid_id=&#8221;vc_gid:1773759053663-a566c9c2-fb44-8&#8243; include=&#8221;1041,1042,623,1039&#8243;]<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In 2021, we had a virtual activity called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marine.usf.edu\/genomics\/virus-hunters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Virus Hunters<\/a> where students learned about viruses within many living creatures in an estuary. From 2022-2024, we had an activity called the Seagrass Maze, based off our research project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marine.usf.edu\/genomics\/outreach\/vida-seagrass\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VIDA seagrass<\/a>. Kids searched a life size seagrass maze for animals and built their own food web. In 2025, we revised the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/dnadetectives\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DNA Detectives<\/a> activity using our <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.asm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1128\/jmbe.v22i1.2191\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published version<\/a>.<\/p>\n[vc_media_grid element_width=&#8221;3&#8243; css=&#8221;&#8221; grid_id=&#8221;vc_gid:1773759053671-f1801c68-9fb8-4&#8243; include=&#8221;1773,1771,1774,1775&#8243;]<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In 2026, we created a new activity called &#8220;Microscopic Ocean Trials.&#8221; This activity introduced kids to virus-bacteria interactions in the ocean. The students play as the bacteria surviving in the ocean, gaining adaptations (viral DNA) to pass various trials, like an escape room.<\/p>\n[vc_media_grid element_width=&#8221;3&#8243; css=&#8221;&#8221; grid_id=&#8221;vc_gid:1773759089726-4ce406a5-9136-8&#8243; include=&#8221;1877,1888,1891,1890&#8243;]<hr><h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">Girls Inc.<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Dr. Breitbart&#8217;s lab has worked with Girls Inc., bringing fun activities to the their Pinellas Park location and bringing the girls to USF&#8217;s College of Marine Science. Our lab has brought them colorful bacteria to paint with, plankton to view under microscopes, sea snails to touch and hold, and even lionfish to dissect. This activity is a great way to make a lab protocol that we do on daily basis, interactive and fun for kids. They get to see their DNA with their own eyes, which most people can&#8217;t say they have ever done before.<\/p>\n[vc_media_grid element_width=&#8221;3&#8243; grid_id=&#8221;vc_gid:1773759053676-0d34e2e8-d3f7-7&#8243; include=&#8221;942,943&#8243;]<hr><h2><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">Media Matters &amp; Phage Isolation<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">When working with higher level students, like high schoolers or undergrads, we like to work with bacteria and viruses. This activity has two parts, one demonstrating how bacteria are grown on different nutrient sources (ex. salty marine broth vs. nutrient rich broth), and the other demonstrates how viruses are isolated from different environmental samples.
