The Oceanography Camp is a summer enrichment program for girls poised to enter high school. The camp setting motivates young women to consider career opportunities in the sciences by encouraging their desire to understand the natural world around them. The program provides multidisciplinary, hands-on learning experiences in both laboratory and field environments. Activities include a research cruise, coastal fieldtrips, research projects, career explorations, and environmental stewardship.
This program derives its uniqueness not only from real-world environmental studies and awareness, but also from one-on-one mentoring between teen-aged girls and women established in the sciences. Participants work side by side with female professors and graduate students from the College of Marine Science as well as professionals from government agencies and industries. The camp promotes developing a positive sense of self and establishing life long friendships.
Our recruitment goals are to encourage ALL girls’ interests in science. Campers include minority and non-minority girls and girls from all learning abilities—high achieving, average, and high potential students. Short-term evaluations indicate that enrichment has made a difference to participants, including; 1) an increase in math and science courses taken and planned; 2) a decrease in negative stereotypes about science and scientist; 3) an increased understanding of the research process; and 4) a strengthened commitment towards careers in math, science, and engineering. We ask that you will especially encourage minority girls from your school to apply.
