{"id":338,"date":"2020-01-13T16:33:57","date_gmt":"2020-01-13T16:33:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marine.usf.edu\/scamp\/?page_id=338"},"modified":"2020-01-17T13:42:15","modified_gmt":"2020-01-17T13:42:15","slug":"mapping-reef-fish-density-using-an-ek-60","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.marine.usf.edu\/scamp\/about\/mapping-reef-fish-density-using-an-ek-60\/","title":{"rendered":"Mapping Reef Fish Density using an EK-60"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Mapping reef fish density using the SIMRAD EK60 Scientific Echosounder<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-516 lazyload\" title=\"Ek60 Mount\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marine.usf.edu\/scamp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/ek60-mount.jpg\" alt=\"Ek60 Mount\" width=\"223\" height=\"400\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marine.usf.edu\/scamp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/ek60-mount.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.marine.usf.edu\/scamp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/ek60-mount-167x300.jpg 167w\" sizes=\"auto\" \/>C-SCAMP scientists are working with water column acoustic data collected using a SIMRAD EK60 split-beam scientific echosounder in conjunction with the towed video collected with C-BASS. \u00a0This is the same echosounder system that the NMFS employs on their fisheries acoustic survey vessels. \u00a0One of the key strengths of the EK60 is that it can be calibrated, and the gain and backscatter settings can be accurately dialed in, which is very important when trying to perform density estimation from acoustic returns.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The R\/V <em>Weatherbird II<\/em> has a hull-mounted EK-60 with an operating frequency of 38 kHz collecting full water column data during all C-BASS cruises. These data are used to estimate the densities of reef fish present using different echocounting and echointegration techniques.
