Over the last couple weeks, TBS had a positive impact at USF’s Oceanography Camp for Girls!

The OCG toxicology lab was created by TBS students Kylee and Alexandra to encourage the campers to think not only about their environment but how human activities affect the health of the environment and the organisms living in it, namely important recreational and subsistence fishes in Tampa Bay.

The girls used Kylee and Alexandra’s real fish data to learn about bioaccumulation and biomagnification of chemical contaminants, to learn how chemists use lab machines such as the ASE and GC-MS, and to develop their own hypotheses to test, evaluate, and share their findings!

“We constructed the Toxicology Lab as a way to show OCG Campers what we do in TBS in a daily basis. We teach them everything from terms like bio accumulation to the internal workings of the GC-MS to ageing fish using otoliths. They got to be real TBS scientists for the day and learn the impacts that environmental contaminants can have on the ecosystem and the community.”- Kylee Rullo-Soletti

We are so proud of our team for teaching a younger generation about our project, inspiring them to be environmental stewards and maybe even scientists themselves one day! Currently, there are guidelines for PFAS in drinking water, but not in fish. This matters for subsistence fishers especially, because we don’t fully know what levels are safe for people who regularly eat local catch. 💧🐟

Our project chemist, Devon Firesinger, was recently published as an author on the paper titled “PFAS contamination in Florida estuarine fishes: Levels, patterns, and estimated human and ecological health risks”. Click the link in our story to read it.

Science isn’t just data, it’s a tool to support our communities. 🧬

#TampaBay #PFAS #ScienceCommunication #fish #environmentalhealth" class="awb-instagram-masonry-image" src="https://scontent-mia5-1.cdninstagram.com/v/t51.71878-15/656636438_1456766232555853_8029612323709658166_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_e35_tt6&_nc_cat=104&ccb=7-5&_nc_sid=18de74&efg=eyJlZmdfdGFnIjoiQ0xJUFMuYmVzdF9pbWFnZV91cmxnZW4uQzMifQ%3D%3D&_nc_ohc=Y9L38yhltU8Q7kNvwF-SwEe&_nc_oc=AdqldJnrIjsVaVOM2hjzFRFr-FRH22pGDRroT3LNfduFnCxGDXEuhe6qfVbuzpauu54&_nc_zt=23&_nc_ht=scontent-mia5-1.cdninstagram.com&edm=ANo9K5cEAAAA&_nc_gid=aKbnz1sLAChHxBfWLo-CLA&_nc_tpa=Q5bMBQHjnzrP67QXj_RmnKdR6IqhKI696Dk67gDX17nK-wvU17iTmLxLkVYX9ux0DcIPS8eRP2K4Zfm3&oh=00_AQAurDzk83W0xGyFvFNJWLObL41Wgd_vJmyyb-arYzVzCQ&oe=6A524E9E"/>

<img decoding="async" alt="TBS is collecting oyster samples from Tampa Bay year-round. 🦪➡️🔬

Quarter 3 collections occurred in rather chilly weather, but they sure were fun! 🥶❄️

With a total of 4 field days & help from our local charter captains, the TBS team collected oysters from 19 different sites around the bay.
