Real Time Data Activities
On-Line Lessons Using The Tampa Bay
P.O.R.T.S Site in The Classroom

Real time data streams offer an unparalled opportunity to understand relationships in science and mathematics while presenting many opportunities to practice basic and advanced skills in a dynamic context. The Tampa Bay P.O.R.T.S. site reports marine and meteorological data collected 24 hours a day at 10 sites in the greater Tampa Bay Area. This lesson will take you through 3 levels of activities. The first is Navigating the Site, where you will learn what information is presented and how to access this information. The second level is Understanding the Data, were you will learn to read the charts and give meaning to the data. The third level will require you to Use the Data to solve a problem. :

This lesson contains links to standards in science and mathematics which you should practice and master as you read the material, interpret data, answer questions, and solve problems. By frequently looking back on these objectives you can keep a focus and evaluate your own learning. There is also a link to the Tampa Bay P.O.R.T.S. site and other sites which offer information which will be helpful to you.

*Note to teachers

The P.O.R.T.S. site and activities are intended for use with students in grades 9 through 12 and above. An Advanced 8th grade class should also do well.
